Through works such as Woman with a Flower (Vahine no te Tiare, 1891) and Sacred Spring: Sweet Dreams (Nave Nave Moe, 1894), he established a distinct Primitivist aesthetic that radiated sunlight and vivid color. Rooted in a tradition of exotic sensuality, his dense, buttery brushstrokes lingered in particular over the contours of Tahitian women.\n\nGauguin passed away in total solitude in the neighboring Marquesas Islands, and a large portion of his personal papers and belongings was dispersed at a local auction. The immense reach of his influence—notably on a rising generation of the French avant-garde, including Picasso and Matisse—remained largely unrecognized until an insightful art dealer began curating and exhibiting Gauguin’s creations in Paris.
