For over 50 years, Frank Frazetta has reigned as the undisputed king of fantasy art, with the financial value of his paintings now matching the intense devotion of his admirers. His creations continue to surpass previous auction records year after year, demonstrated when his 1967 Conan cover for Lancer Books fetched 13.5 million dollars in September 2025. Born in Brooklyn in 1928 to Sicilian immigrant parents, Frazetta possessed movie-star looks, extraordinary athletic skill in the minor leagues, a brush with petty crime, and a reputation as a serial seducer. While he characterized himself as lazy and difficult, he routinely started a painting the night before its deadline and finished it in a matter of hours, nevertheless delivering a masterpiece—often delivered with the paint still wet, yet undeniable in its brilliance. He entered the comic book industry at the age of 16, contributing to notable publishers including EC Comics, before transitioning into movie posters and subsequently into pulp covers for Tarzan and Conan. Along the way, he illustrated covers for National Lampoon despite clashing with the editors' "hippie politics," collaborated with director Ralph Bakshi to create the animated film Fire & Ice, and taught himself to paint with his left hand after the first in a series of strokes paralyzed his right hand at age 68. As he stated during the 1970s: "I'm a very physical thinker. In Brooklyn, I knew Conan, I knew guys just like him." Drawing upon this direct familiarity with muscle and macho culture, Frazetta redefined fantasy heroes into figures that were more massive, more menacing, and more testosterone-driven than anything seen before. In turn, he reimagined their female counterparts with thick thighs, generous hips, and fairy-like faces, yet rendered them convincingly realistic through soft bellies and subtle traces of cellulite. Simply put, Frazetta's art carries the addictive quality of potato chips, now delivered in a compact, appealing, and budget-friendly format.
