Centred on the primary themes of movement and machinery, Futurism was established in 1909 by Filippo Tommaso Marinetti alongside the painters Giacomo Balla, Umberto Boccioni, Carlo Carrà, and Gino Severini. Bringing together an array of painters, sculptors, designers, architects, and writers, the circle sought to drag the dusty establishment into an elegant, powerful, and purified era of modernity. Futurism occupies a position in art history that is as significant as it is contradictory.
