Paul Gauguin (1848–1903) was never suited for the world of finance. He did not last very long in the French Navy either, nor during his time in Copenhagen working as a tarpaulin salesman who spoke no Danish. He began painting in his spare time in 1873 and was admitted to the Paris Salon in 1876. Just three years later, his work was being exhibited alongside pieces by Pissarro, Degas, and Monet. Gauguin was a difficult personality and a heavy drinker who frequently referred to himself as a "savage." His close yet strained friendship with Vincent van Gogh, another hot-tempered figure, culminated in a violent episode in 1888, when van Gogh allegedly confronted Gauguin with a razor and subsequently severed his own ear. Shortly after this incident, having completed his mid-career masterpiece Vision After the Sermon (1888), Gauguin departed for Tahiti to escape everything he viewed as "artificial and conventional." While in Tahiti, Gauguin experienced an overwhelming fascination with the landscape, the indigenous inhabitants, and the figurative imagery of the island, which sparked a remarkably productive output of paintings and prints. Through works such as Woman with a Flower (Vahine no te Tiare, 1891) and Sacred Spring: Sweet Dreams (Nave Nave Moe, 1894), he established a distinct Primitivist aesthetic that radiated sunlight and vivid color. Rooted in a tradition of exotic sensuality, his dense, buttery brushstrokes lingered in particular over the contours of Tahitian women. Gauguin passed away in total solitude in the neighboring Marquesas Islands, and a large portion of his personal papers and belongings was dispersed at a local auction. The immense reach of his influence—notably on a rising generation of the French avant-garde, including Picasso and Matisse—remained largely unrecognized until an insightful art dealer began curating and exhibiting Gauguin’s creations in Paris.
