Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858) is recognized as one of the last major masters of the Japanese ukiyo-e tradition. Translating to "pictures of the floating world," ukiyo-e defined Japanese art from the 17th through the 19th centuries and served as one of the most vital visual traditions forming Western perceptions of Japan. While Hiroshige addressed numerous subjects such as beautiful women, theater actors, urban life, and natural scenes, he achieved particular renown for his landscape art. Regarded as his masterpiece, the series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo depicts the streets, gardens, and daily routines of Edo (present-day Tokyo) across various seasons through extraordinary powers of observation.
