The legend surrounding Jean-Michel Basquiat remains as potent as ever. Synonymous with 1980s New York, the artist first gained recognition during the late 1970s under the tag "SAMO", spray-painting biting commentary and fragmented poetry across the walls of the city. He emerged within a dynamic underground scene that united visual arts, graffiti, hip-hop, post-punk, and DIY filmmaking, coming together in a rapidly expanding art world. As a painter with a potent and distinctive voice, Basquiat swiftly crossed over into the established art circles, staging exhibitions in galleries across the globe. Basquiat's expressive style was built around raw figures, as well as integrated words and phrases. His artworks drew inspiration from a pantheon of prominent personalities across jazz, boxing, and basketball, while incorporating references to arcane history and the politics of street life. Indeed, when asked about the subject matter of his paintings, Basquiat responded: "royalty, heroism and the streets." In 1983, he initiated collaborative projects with the most famous star of the art scene, Andy Warhol, and in 1985 he appeared on the cover of The New York Times Magazine. When Basquiat passed away at the age of 27, he had established himself as one of the most successful artists of his era. This volume provides an unprecedented look at Basquiat's art through impeccable reproductions of his most significant paintings, drawings, and notebook sketches. Thanks to its large-scale format, the book offers a vivid closeness to Basquiat's intricate marks and scribbled texts, while further illuminating this world through an introductory essay on the artist by editor Hans Werner Holzwarth, along with an essay on his themes and creative development written by curator and art historian Eleanor Nairne. The richly illustrated, year-by-year chronological chapters incorporate excerpts from the artist's own statements as well as contemporary reviews, shedding light on both his personal background and his historical context.
