The book showcases experimental Surrealist photography from the 1920s alongside the compelling documentary realism of the 1930s, which features Dorothea Lange’s Migrant Mother. In addition to observing influential figures of power (Che Guevara) and heartbreakers (Marilyn Monroe), we encounter the broad spectrum of human emotions and experiences documented so vividly by photography. We explore moments ranging from Doisneau’s joyful Kiss in Front of City Hall (1950) to Nick Ut’s horrifying Napalm Against Civilians frame, which depicts nine-year-old Phan Thi Kim Phúc running naked toward the lens while fleeing South Vietnamese napalm.
