More than a century ago, the brothers Adolf ("Adi") and Rudolf Dassler manufactured their very first pair of sports shoes. Following hundreds of groundbreaking designs, legendary moments, and star-studded brand partnerships, this book provides a visual study of adidas footwear through roughly 200 models. To continuously refine his products and tailor them to the specific requirements of athletes, Dassler asked competitors to send back their worn footwear when they no longer needed it, leading to an accumulation of all these pairs in his attic (even today, numerous athletes still return their shoes to adidas, often as a gesture of appreciation after securing a championship or breaking a world record). This collection now makes up the "adidas archive", representing one of the largest—and perhaps the single largest—historical holdings of any sports goods manufacturer worldwide, which photographers Christian Habermeier and Sebastian Jäger have been visually documenting down to the finest detail for years. Captured using the highest-quality printing and reproduction methods, these photographs reveal blemishes, tears, repair tape, grass marks, and faded autographs in precise detail. Everything is shown here unaltered and documented in extremely high resolution, thereby uncovering the personal story of each individual wearer. We witness everything from the boots worn by the West German football team during their "miraculous" 1954 World Cup victory, to the shoes Kathrine Switzer wore when running the Boston Marathon in 1967 before women were officially permitted to compete; from custom-made designs for icons ranging from Madonna to Lionel Messi, to collaborative projects with figures such as Pharrell Williams, Raf Simons, Stella McCartney, or Yohji Yamamoto, as well as the brand's pioneering techniques and materials. Accompanied by expert commentary, every image not only explains why and how a particular shoe was manufactured, but also communicates the driving force behind adidas. What we encounter goes far beyond mere design; in the end, these are simply shoes worn out by the individuals who loved them—yet they also stand as direct witnesses to our history of sports, design, and culture, from the initial steps taken by the Dassler brothers and the founding of adidas all the way to the present day.
