The era in which the great Pieter Bruegel (c. 1526/30–1569) lived was defined by severe cultural strife. The artist directly witnessed the wars of religion, the brutal regime established by the Duke of Alba as governor of the Netherlands, and the tangible impact of the Inquisition. Even in the present day, this Flemish master remains shrouded in mystery; we know neither the precise location nor the exact date of his birth. Yet, while earlier scholarship placed strong emphasis on the vernacular and folk nature of his paintings and graphic pieces, contemporary studies attach greater significance to the humanistic substance found across his works. Bruegel started his career designing prints for the publisher Hieronymus Cock, creating multiple print series that were circulated throughout Europe. These images depicted sins and virtues alongside vibrant peasant festivities and sweeping landscape panoramas. Over time, he turned his focus increasingly toward painting, producing work for the cultural elite of Antwerp and Brussels. This monograph stands as a testament to Bruegel's artistic evolution, portraying a creator who not only delivered fresh inventions and visual solutions but also confronted the troubling issues of his epoch with great courage. Rather than presenting an idealized view of reality, he engaged with the horrors of religious conflict and maintained a critical perspective toward the institutional Church. To achieve this while avoiding potential reprisals, he devised a distinctly subversive pictorial language, infusing outwardly harmless scenes of everyday life with subliminal messages. Capturing the complete breadth and splendid detail of Bruegel’s entire body of work like never before, this collection brings together all 40 paintings, 65 drawings, and 89 engravings in flawless reproductions—with every single piece serving as an unmatched witness to both the religious customs and the close-knit popular culture of his time.
