Even though society frequently seems divided between feline enthusiasts and canine fans, Walter Chandoha, the twentieth century's foremost pet photographer, fortunately found himself happily situated right in between. Over a career spanning more than seven decades, he held an equal fondness for both of these fascinating creatures, appreciating their singular beauty, their distinctive personalities, and their qualities as photographic subjects. While working on his critically acclaimed TASCHEN volume Cats, Chandoha had also handpicked his personal favorite dog images for a potential sequel, meticulously organizing hundreds of contact sheets, prints, and color transparencies into clearly labeled storage boxes. Sadly, Chandoha passed away in 2019 at the age of 98, yet his artistic legacy endures through this elegant follow-up publication centered on humankind's most faithful companion. In the introduction to the volume, photography critic Jean Dykstra notes: "Walter Chandoha's dog photographs are compelling not just because dogs have an inherent appeal, but because the person behind the camera was a master of his craft." Featuring over 60 distinct breeds captured in monochrome alongside striking Kodachrome hues, the collection presents terriers, collies, beagles, bloodhounds, poodles, small varieties, large breeds, exhibition dogs, working canines, and many others. Encompassing a 50-year timeframe, the work is arranged into six distinct sections, with each segment highlighting Chandoha's exceptional aptitude for merging technical expertise, versatility, and emotional warmth. The introductory chapter, "In the Studio," concentrates on formal portraiture, while the subsequent chapter, "Strike a Pose," showcases these endearing companions almost theatrical in their antics before the lens. Within "Out and About," viewers observe dogs roaming unrestrained and playing, frequently captured alongside Chandoha's own children; following this, "Best in Show" sees Chandoha utilizing his documentary reportage skills to document the nostalgic dog competitions of the Mad Men era. In "Tails from the City," dogs roam through mid-century New York streetscapes, whereas the concluding segment, "Country Dogs," returns to natural surroundings, open fields, and seaside shores. Dogs represents an unleashed photographic tribute celebrating these charming, devoted animals.
