Early in 1964, photographer Harry Benson received a call from the photo editor at London's Daily Express, assigning him to cover the Beatles on their trip to Paris. That assignment marked the start of a career-defining relationship that would establish Benson's reputation and yield some of the most intimate photographs ever taken of the band. While in Paris, Benson captured the "Fab Four" engaged in a pillow fight at the George V Hotel—a spontaneous scene reflecting the band's spirit, which Benson himself described as the finest shot of his entire career. Later that same year, he accompanied the group on their debut tour across the United States, recording their appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, their unexpected encounter with Cassius Clay, and the frenzy of "Beatlemania" in New York. Benson went on to photograph George Harrison on his honeymoon in Barbados, document the Beatles during the filming of their first movie, A Hard Day’s Night, and accompany them on the now-infamous 1966 tour where John Lennon remarked that the Beatles were "more popular than Jesus." This pocket-sized edition brings back the finest selections from Benson's striking black-and-white Beatles portfolio. Complemented by contemporary quotes and period press clippings, the volume features an introductory text written by the photographer himself, providing a compelling firsthand perspective alongside these iconic visuals of music history's greatest band.
