The legend of Jean-Michel Basquiat remains as powerful as ever. Synonymous with 1980s New York, the artist first gained recognition in the late 1970s under the tag "SAMO," spraying biting remarks and fragmented poetry across the walls of the city. He emerged as part of a vibrant underground scene formed by visual arts, graffiti, hip-hop, post-punk, and DIY filmmaking, all converging within a rapidly expanding art world. As a painter possessing a strong and original voice, Basquiat quickly broke into established art circles, staging exhibitions in galleries across the globe. Basquiat’s expressive style relied on raw figures, integrated words, and textual phrases. His works drew inspiration from a pantheon of prominent figures across jazz, boxing, and basketball, while containing references to esoteric history and the politics of street life. Indeed, when questioned about the subject matter of his paintings, Basquiat answered, "royalty, heroism, and the streets." In 1983, he began collaborating with the art world's most famous star, Andy Warhol, and in 1985, he appeared on the cover of The New York Times Magazine. When Basquiat passed away at the age of 27, he had become one of the most successful artists of his era. First published in an XXL format to provide an unprecedented look at Basquiat’s art, this work now meets readers in a compact and accessible volume in honor of TASCHEN’s 40th anniversary. Through immaculate reproductions of his most major paintings, drawings, and notebook sketches, the book offers a vivid closeness to Basquiat’s intricate marks and scrawled words. This world is illuminated further through an introductory text on the artist by editor Hans Werner Holzwarth, alongside an essay exploring the artist’s themes and artistic development written by curator and art historian Eleanor Nairne. Richly illustrated, year-by-year chronological chapters reveal both his personal background and historical context by citing the artist’s own statements as well as contemporary reviews from the period.
