“In GENESIS, my camera allowed nature to speak to me. And to listen was my privilege.” — Sebastião Salgado On a fortunate day in 1970, the 26-year-old Sebastião Salgado held a camera for the very first time. Looking through the viewfinder, he experienced an epiphany: suddenly, life held meaning. From that moment onward—even though gaining the necessary experience to earn a living as a photographer demanded years of rigorous effort—the camera turned into his primary instrument for interacting with the world. Having “always preferred the chiaroscuro palette of black-and-white images,” Salgado shot very little in color early in his career before giving up color photography entirely. Raised on a farm in Brazil, Salgado cultivated a profound love and reverence for the natural world; simultaneously, he developed a sharp sensitivity to the ways human beings are impacted by socio-economic conditions that are frequently destructive. Among the numerous bodies of work created throughout Salgado’s highly acclaimed career, three long-term initiatives stand out: Workers (1993), which chronicled the disappearing ways of life of manual laborers across the globe; Migrations (2000), conceived as a tribute to mass human displacements driven by famine, natural catastrophes, environmental degradation, and demographic pressures; and this new masterwork, GENESIS, the culmination of an epic eight-year expedition aimed at rediscovering the mountains, deserts, oceans, animals, and peoples that have managed to elude the imprint of modern society until now—the land and life of a planet that remains untouched. “Some 46% of the planet is still as it was in the time of genesis,” Salgado reminds us. “We must preserve what exists.” Alongside Instituto Terra, an organization established by the Salgado family, the GENESIS project is devoted to displaying the beauty of our planet, reversing the damage inflicted upon it, and safeguarding it for the future. Over the course of more than 30 journeys undertaken on foot, in light aircraft, seagoing vessels, canoes, and even hot-air balloons—traveling through extreme heat and cold, often under perilous conditions—Salgado assembled a visual collection that portrays nature, wildlife, and indigenous peoples in breathtaking beauty. What, then, do we encounter in GENESIS? The animal species and volcanoes of the Galápagos; the penguins, sea lions, cormorants, and whales of Antarctica and the South Atlantic; Brazilian alligators and jaguars; African lions, leopards, and elephants; the isolated Zo'é tribe deep within the Amazon rainforest; the Stone Age Korowai people of West Papua; the nomadic Dinka cattle herders of Sudan; the Nenet nomads and their reindeer herds in the Arctic Circle; the Mentawai forest communities dwelling on islands west of Sumatra; the icebergs of Antarctica; the volcanoes of Central Africa and the Kamchatka Peninsula; the Saharan deserts; the Negro and Juruá rivers in the Amazon; the deep chasms of the Grand Canyon; the glaciers of Alaska... and beyond. Having dedicated so much time, energy, and passion to the creation of this work, Salgado describes GENESIS as “my love letter to the planet.”
