This volume brings together the paint-covered palettes of fifty internationally renowned creators alongside the paintings produced from them, examining the chosen shades and brushstrokes in depth to uncover surprising new narratives about each figure and their artistic output. Arranged in a broadly chronological sequence, the book spans from the seventeenth century through to the present day, featuring creators such as Artemisia Gentileschi, Paul Cézanne, Berthe Morisot, Vincent Van Gogh, Wassily Kandinsky, Georgia O’Keeffe, and Bridget Riley, among others. Each palette—whether captured through photography or depicted within self-portraits—is paired with one or more artworks that mirror the colours sitting upon it. Art historian and colour authority Alexandra Loske expertly investigates the paint selections and stroke techniques of each individual, revealing not only how they applied pigment to their creations, but also recounting the history of their creative paths with colour and how their methods influenced their respective cultures. For instance, Georges Seurat organized the pigments on his palette in a prismatic arrangement to keep hues separated, pairing each shade alongside a spot of white paint. His pointillism method was reflected with equal precision on both his palette and his canvas. Meanwhile, Kerry James Marshall incorporates zinc white spots and faint pink streaks onto the exaggerated white palettes held by Black figures in his portraits, prompting thought-provoking questions regarding the function of colour in narrating Black history and Western art. The Artist's Palette serves as an engaging reference work for devotees of art history, a wider audience eager to understand how major painters worked with colour, and amateur painters looking for inspiration in their own creative endeavours.
