The narrative of The Colour of Clothes presents the story of the first practical colour process in photography and how it intersected with the evolution of fashion, reaching from Edwardian elegance to the new freedom and fluidity of the 1920s. As Alfred Stieglitz stated in 1907: "Soon the world will be colour-mad, and Lumière will be responsible." These words announced the arrival of the autochrome colour process, an invention of the Lumière brothers. Autochrome not only transformed photography, but it also recorded the shift that carried fashion from Edwardian elegance toward a modern, liberated aesthetic. The book celebrates the unique beauty of the autochrome through approximately 370 images. The realm of couture, including figures such as Fortuny, Poiret, Doucet, Vionnet, Lucile, Chanel, and Lanvin, embraced the autochrome's capacity to present their creations in exquisite light and colour. Beyond fashion, the volume also features examples such as the luxury object exhibitions of the Salon du Goût Français and Albert Kahn's Archives de la Planète, an endeavour aimed at documenting global cultures through autochromes. The contributing photographers include celebrated names such as Lartigue, Stieglitz, and Steichen, alongside often lesser-known practitioners, including female photographers who mastered the technique. Regardless of their identity, they preserved this historic moment in photography that documented the world of fashion in colour for the very first time.
